Hispanic Heritage Month Open House

The Wisconsin Historical Society is partnering with the Madison Latino Chamber of Commerce to host a Hispanic Heritage Month Open House on Friday, September 20th.
Doors Open at 5:00pm with the program to begin at 6:30pm.
Included in the event is food, live entertainment, museum & archival collections, and other society department booths.
Keynote Speakers: Jesus Salas & Sergio Gonzalez
Jesus Salas is the descendant of a Mexican-American family who first came to Wisconsin during the 1940s. He worked throughout his early school years as a migrant farmworker. Salas led protests, marches, and organizing efforts to secure rights and improve conditions for himself, his family, and the migrant community during the 1960s and 1970s. Salas has an undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and an advanced degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Salas is a ShopTalk speaker for the Wisconsin Humanities Council’s Working Lives Project, and has worked as a teacher and scholar at Madison Area Technical College (now Madison College), the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Salas served as a member of the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents from 2003-07.
Sergio González joins the Departments of History and of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures as an assistant professor of Latinx Studies. A native of Milwaukee, he received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the spring of 2018 with a dissertation entitled “’I Was a Stranger and You Welcomed Me’: Latino Immigration, Religion, and Community Formation in Milwaukee, 1920-1990.” His teaching and research interests include U.S. labor and working-class and immigration history, and the histories of Chicano and Latinx communities and religion. Along with his research and teaching interests in Midwestern Latinx communities, González service commitments include working with MU’s Hispanic Serving Institution initiative.
